THE ZEPPELIN RAID ON ENGLAND
LATEST REPORTS 54 KILLED; 67 INJURED The High Commissioner reports:— London, February 1, 6.45 p.m. Last night's air raid was attempted on an extensive scale, but it appears that the raiders were hampered by a thick mist. Crossing the coast, the Zeppelins steered on various courses, dropping bombs ill several towns and rural districts in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Staffordshire, and causing, some damago to property. No accurato reports were received until a very late hour. The casualties at present notified: are fifty-four killed and sixty-seven injurod. London, February 1, 8.45 p.m. . "Further reports show that the air raid attacks covered a larger area than any of Olio previous raids. Bombs were dropped in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, and Derbyshire. The material damage was inconsiderable, and there was no case of military damage. No further casualties have been reported."
220 BOMBS DROPPED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyrlslit (Reo, February 2, 8.20 p.m.) London, February 1. The Press Bureau announces that the Zeppelins yesterday dropped bombs on several towns in the rural "districts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Staffordshire. The Germans claim to have bombed Liverpool and Birkenhead, the smelting furnaces at Nottingham and Sheffield, the industrial works on the Humber and Yarmouth. The War Offico states: "Further reports show that Monday's raid covered the largest area of any previous occasion. Bombs were also dropped in Norfolk and Suffolk. It is estimated that 220 bombs were dropped. Except in one part of Staffordshire, the material damage done was not considerable. There was no military damage. No further casualties have been reported." TRACEDIES IN STREETS OF LONDON. New York, February 1. A' dispatch to the "Tribune" from London, which is believed to refer to the Zeppelin raid, says that eleven deatlhs were reported in England due to the lighting restrictions. Five tragedies occurred in London streets, three of the victims being soldiers.
