VALUABLE RAIN
Tho rain which fell in the Ashburton district last week has already made 11 very marked change for the hotter in many of tho grass paddocks, and in instances where they have not heen fed down quite bare, the grass is again quite green, according to a southern report. There is also a good spring in the grass along many of the roadsides, and this will he a great help to travelling stock. The rape and the root crops have been immensely benefited. The stacking of grain, too, has heen made liuioli easier, as the rain softened the straw considerably, aiul made' it much less brittle to handle. A lot of stook threshing is being done, but,.so far no important return- of average yields have conic to hand, and it is at presmit impossible to give oven an approximate estimate of what the average yields will bo. Some crops which looked'very promising while standing ■ and while in sto'ok, will give disappointing yields, as in a number of instances a •close examination of the heads showthat the late frost did more damage than was at first thought to be tho case.
