WATERSPOUTS IN OTAGO

Dunedln, February 1. , Following tho extremely hot weather, disastrous waterspouts yesterday afternoon swept over tho lower regions of Clyde and Cromwell (Jorge. A spout struck the .high country on the hill about tho Champagne Hills Cutting on the Otago Central Railway, and extended right down to the Clyde Flat, which now presents an awe-inspiring spectacle. ' Desolation was wrought on tho property of Mr. Doigi orchardist. A portion of his houso was struck and swept away, and a largo area of the orchard was smothered with ; large stones and debris. The railway line was seriously damaged, and also the main road, while the telegraph lines to Cromwell aio down in several places,_ cutting communication and suspending traffic from Cromwell, which is a_ serious matter for w'oolgrowers, orcliardists, and fanners.
