LULL IN THE FIGHTING - NEWS OF SOMME BATTLE EAGERLY AWAITED / The High Commissioner reports: ' London, January 31, 4.55 p.m. "North of Arras, two grenade attacks by the enemy during night, west of Hill 140, failed. "In Champagne the Allies' artillery bombarded the trenches north of Proines; in the course of the action explosions were seen at four points on the enemy's front. "In the Argonne there has been mine fighting at La Haute Clievaucliee. On .the explosion of a German mine the French counter-mined, and destroyed one of. the enemy's galleries." The German attacks in the West, beginning near the Belgian coast, and spreading from sector to sector, suggest that tliey were testing tho FrancoBritish line until they found a weak spot. They then pushed in and scored a local success. EAGER INTEREST IN THE EVENTS IN THE SOMME REGION 1 (Rec. February 1, 10.40 p.m.) London, February I. Further news of the fighting in the Somme region is eagerly awaited. There was a lull last night, but it is evident/that the Gentians are not disnTaying that reluctance to attack which, the optimists expected as poof of the enemy's dwindling man power.
