NOTES AND COMMENTS

A final reminder is given these concerned that entries for the Woodville District Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting close tonight at 8 o'clock. Trotting owners should note that entriesior the Manawatu Club's annual meetnng to be held on February 19, close to-night at 10 o'clock, with Secretary I W. M Aenzie, box 186, I'almerston North. The programme of the Rangitikei Racing Club's annual meeting appears in this issue. The meeting is to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, March 22 and 23. All classes of horses are catered for, and the programme will be found well worthy' of perusal by owners. Nominations for the Wanganui Trotting club's annual meeting close on Monday next. ' There will be a gopd deal of racing this week. The Takapuna meeting will conclude on Wednesday, t'lie Egmont Club will race on Wednesday and Thursday, Gisborue on Thursday, and Saturday, and Riccarton on the last-named day. C. Emerson came up from the south yesterday, and goes oil to Hawera this morning. He and the two Reeds, also W. Bell and L. Wilson, go south on Friday to fulfil riding engagements at Riccarton on Saturday next, when the C.J.C. will get off the Midsummer Meeting. : Woolloomooloo, formerly a well-known hurdle horse, wnen carrying the colours of the late Mr. A. F. Douglas, was a runner in the Ladies' Bracelet at Wairoa on Thursday, but the best he could do was to finish third to Sleight of Hand and Fagot. Admirers of the Wanganui-owned Interlude claim that the Bezonian filly has improved considerably of late. , She is engaged in tho five .furlongs Hack Race at Hawera on Monday, and as she, is one of tho quickest beginning hacks about theCoast, she should be able to hold her own in the big Held.
The Asquith Government refused the offer of Colonel Hall-Walker to give his stallions and mares and the famous Tully stud as the nucleus of a Government breeding establishment. It' is said that the offer was turned down because the animals were racehorses, and therefore unfit for breeding.' England has always stood out as the one country where the best of blood, as Tegards horses, is to be found, and it is a great pity that owing to political short-sightedness such famous horses should be allowed to leav® England. Fancy a great racehorse like The White Eagle being turned away. Later on the English Government may be forced to buy him back. The Pole has been nominated for the Australian Cup, for which Beputation is one of the nonular fancies. Jumpers have at times distinguished themselves in this event, but neither in New Zealand nor Australia has The Pole done anything on the flat to make him look more than an extremely remote possibility for 6Uch a race. ' For the Australian Cup, Carlita. Grand Fleet (late Klinger), Lempriero. Reputation, Westcourt, Ulva's Isle, Rusliford, and Marculfus were the ruling favourites when the mail left early last week. After racing at Trentham on the 21th, Sweet Corn was allowed to run out in a. paddock at the Upper Hutt. It is reported that she. got into a barbed wire fence and was badly cut about the hocks. Trainer'A. Shearsby, who lias been residing at Awapuni for some years, has now shifted into the new sta' - V erected for him in Cook Street, Palmerston North. At tbe Northern Wairoa meeting the Auckland horseman, A. ,T. M'Flinn, was kicked in the mouth by a horse and several of his teeth were knocked out. The Spalpeen gelding Troublesome, who was purchased from Air. Alison some time ago and taken to Victoria by ]?. M'Cabs, for an Auckland sportsman won no fewer than four races over iu that State lately. 'After winning a hurdle race at Tenhurst' on Boxing Day, he wont on to Winslow and won both the Hurdles and Steeples on New Year's Day, and followed those victories up by carrying 12st. 71b. home first in the hurdle event at Warrnambool on January 15. Troublesome was a very disappointing performer when racing about Auckland, but has evidently imuroved with age, and may yet capture a good stake over fences.
