FIRES
FLARE AT THE GASWORKS. The Wellington Fire Brigade icceived a call at 12.26 p.m. on Saturday as tho result of a false alarm given by the automatic fire-alarm system in Messrs. Wliitcombe and Tombs' warehouse. It is assumed that tho delicate mechanism connected with the system became affected by tho high temperature prevailing at the time. A firo_ broke out in the retort house of the Wellington Gas Company's works at Miramar yesterday morning, but was subdued before any great amount of damase was done.
