A battered lifeboat has , been picked up off Madeira. 332 SOULS ON BOARD. i (Rec. January 30, 5.5 p.m.) London, January 29. TKe most serious fears are entertained for the safety of the Appam, which was homeward bound. Eighty -guineas per cent, has been paid for reinsurance. The liner is six days overdue, and lias been., posted as missing at Liverpool'. It is reported that she had 200 passengers and 132 of a crew on. • board, ■ including Sir Edward Merewether, Governor of Sierra Leone, his wife, and suite, and many other "\Yest African civil servants.
