MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.; presided at vesterday's sitting of tho Magistrate s Court, when William Norman, a recent arrival from Australia, pleaded ,not guilty to five charges of theft. _ .tj- 0 had been arrested by Constable Richards, and was fpund to be in possession of goods which had been stolen from five different shops in Cuba Street on January • 18. Accused offered no evidence in defence, and "was convicted and sentenced to a month's imprisonment Arthur Thompson, for whom Mr. r. W. Jackson appeared, denied a charge of having obtained a meal on January 22, by means of false pretences. _ After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate dismissed the information. William Reeves, 79 years of age, was convicted of an indecent act in the Basin Reserve, and was remanded until Saturday for sentence in order to enable the police to make inquiries concerning him. AVilliam Williams was remanded until Wednesday next oil charges of using obscene language in Owen Street, and or causing a breach of the peace. Bail was allowed in the sum of £50 and two sureties of £25 each. An elderly in an, named Robert hcott, pleaded guilty t-o a charge of attempted suicide, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. ' On charges of drunkenness, Mary Turten and Catherine Mary Smith were fined ss. each, the alternative being 24 hours' imprisonment. Six first-offend-ing inebriates were also dealt with.
