R. Hatch will ride Empovador in his Eginont and Taranaki engagements, and B. Deeley will steer the other members of It. J. Mason's team. On her form in the Wallaceville Welter Handicap Comely appears to be able to get a distance. It is unfortunate for her owner that F. D. Jones, after entering the filly for the Trial Stakes, one mile, at lUecarton, conceived the idea that the distanco was beyond the Gluten filly, and ho cancelled the nomination. All the members of J. W. Lowe's stables are being given a. few_ days' spell in the paddock, and they will not be raced again until the autumn meeting at Trentham. It is more than likely that G. Price will send the two-year-old filly Ceasefire to Riccarton next week, to contest the Middle Park Plate. She will have-an advantage over tho other two-year-olds engaged, as she has not earned a penalty. ' "Pyjama, who was purchased by a southern sportsman after the Disposal Stakes at Trentham, is not to leave P. Holmes's, stables. He was shipped south* on Monday night. It is quite on the cards that some of the Higliden horses will be raced at the Dunedin Ctip meeting. Their trainer, G. Price, has been to most meetings in the Dominion either as a rider or trainer, but remarkable to relate he has never yet visited' Wingatui. The Achilles horse Chillies is again in work, at Opaki, and will be accorded a nomination at the Woodville meeting, entries for which close on Monday next. Mr. Kobcrt Cooper, owner of Chillies, has enlisted and goes into camp with the Artillery Reinforcements on February 8, . There is a large contingent of North Island horses engaged at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn fixture, which is to be held next month. Amongst the number are Cyra, Rumania. Ceylon. Jlorlie Gain, Nenno. Pursefiller, Multoe, Panmure, and Sedd-el-Bahr. Owing to : the heavy .wpather experienced in the north yesterday it was, found necessary to postpone the Takapuna meeting. Eemarkable to relate a similar state of affairs prevailed la6t year, In consequence of the tracks being heavy Merry Roe is likely io como into favour for the Stewards' Handicap. There is some talk of the Wellington Cup winner, Bee, being sent to Sydney, to race in the near future. Included in the entries for the Dunedin fixture is the chestnut geldin? Oxerihope, who has been under the ban for the past two years. Tho New Zealand jockey, F. (Bronk) Coleman, rode his first winner in Australia early this month, when he was successful on A.J.C. in the Jumpers' Flat at Warwick Farm. Briesa (Field Battery—Celeano) won at the ponies in Sydney this. month. She was ridden by the New Zealand horseman, F. Porter. At Wairio on Wednesday last' Marsa, who used to carry the :*une colours as Bee, and was sold recently for 100 guineas, won her first race for her new owner when she appropriated the Wairio Clip ,from the useful Eorke's Drift. During the last few days (says the Riverton "Star") there hare been a number of enlistments locally, among whom are Jockeys Milne, Taylor, Pankhurst, Willis, and Pemberton. Entries for the Wanganui meeting close to-night. Not one of the eleven horses starting in the Wairio Steeplechase on TTcdnesday last negotiated the course without making a mistake, and of those who came down, all but two fell, at the brush fences. The big sod wall, with a. ditch on the take-off side, was jumped splendidly by all, again showing that it is not the biggest fences which are the most dangerous. Being a local horse and trained on the spot, Welcome Nugget may be given a run in the Egmont Cup, although it cannot be said that the handicapper treated him well 111 asking him to concede Umpei'ador, a former winner of the Cup, 3lb. When in Sydney attending the spring meeting at Randwick, Mr. E. W. Alison, of Auckland, picked up Thoolomi at one of the sales. He is to make his first appearance under silk in the Dominion in the Perry Handicap at Takapuna today. The Sydney horse has the reputation of being a smart galloper in private.
