PETONE COURT

The monthly (sitting of the Magistrate's Court, presided over by Mr. D'. (i, A. Cooper, S.M., was held at Petone yesterday, morning. For failing to attend drill, W. H. Burns was lined 10a. and'7s. costs, or forty-eight hours l imprisonment, and John L. Banks, on a similar charge, was fined ss. and 7s. costs, or twentyfour houvß' imprisonment. William Bolt, for allowing offensive matter to accumulate on his premises, was fined 20s. and 7s. Court costs, ui default three days' imprisonment. 'IVo boys, under twelve yesre of age, for various charges of theft, were cautioned and discharged. On similar charges a boy under fourteen years of, age was convicted and discharged; another, also fourteen years of age, was ordered to receive twelve strokes of tlie birch; while one under fifteen years of age was'ordered nine strokes. Barney ltiddell was fined 405., with 7s. costs, for using obscene language m Jackson Street. ltiddell,- who asked to bo allowed six months in which to pay the fine, was told he would bo allowed 14 days in which to pay,'.-and in default to undergo 14 days' imprisonment. For selling an air-rifle to a youth under 16 years of age, a shopkeeper was fined 55., with 7s. costs. Defondant stated that lie did not luiow the act was illegal, and tho Magistrate pointed out the danger of youths being allowed to handle iirearnis. Tho youth who purchased the gun was cautioned, discharged, and ordered to forfeit tho rifle. Harry Bringezu was fined ss. and 7s.- costs for riding a motor-cycle oil the footpath between Wellington and Petone. Maurice Edward Denmston, on. a similar charge, was convicted and discharged. CIVIL CASES. Judgment by default was given m the following civil cases:—J. «• M'Etfan v. J. Horsfall, £3 15s.j costs 55.; same v. R. J. Bryant, £2 Bs. 4(L, costs Ss.; W. L. Jonness v. H. E. Davenport, 10s., costs lis.; Claude Collett v. H. J. Burden, £6 Is., costs 145.; George G. Martin v, T. H. Cook, £2 lis. Gd., costs 10s. In a judgment summons case, J. L. Sullivan was ordered to pay H. B. Gilmore £5 15s. by February 23, in default six days' imprisonment.
