MASTERTON NOTES
Mr. A. P. Dryden, Chief Postmaster of Wellington, visited Mastorton on Saturday, and mot a deputation in regard to 1 - the mail 'service with Te Wharau. Mr. Dryden 6tated' that a satisfactory tender had been received for the carriage of the mails from Carterton on two days a week, and he suggested that mails be sent from Ma-sterton on two alternate days. This suggestion met with the approval of the deputation. The -Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew a race from Helensville on Saturday. The winning bird (Mr. W. Gotirlay's "Adoration')'did the distance in 11 hours, which is a very creditable performance, considering the weather. The winning players at the Masterton lawn tenuis tournament are beinn* issued certificates in lieu of trophies. The whole of the proceeds of the tournament are being devoted to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund.
■"The Hon. A. L. Herdman was invited to officially open the Autumn Show of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society. He has replied that he regrets his inability to be present, as lie has an engagement in the north. The Masterton Borough Council will fix the statutory half-holiday at its meeting on Tuesday night. It is expected that Thursday will bo adopted, as in the past.
