GENERAL NOTES
The pasture in the Pongaroa district is in exceptionally good order for this period of the season, being quite green, ■which is somewhat unusual for January, Some .of the older settlers consider that' the.'present season' is the best experienced in the Akitio County for many years.
' The milk yield in the Dannevirke district for the December month shows a substantial increase compared with the corresponding period last season. Feed is reported to be abundant.
A. trip over) any of the roads in South Canterbury at present is most interesting, in vew of the doubtful result of the harvest, but none can be more interesting than a run to Waimate. From ths road crops are to be seen in all stages, from those which can scarcely claim the name,; to'crops that compare with normal seasons.. Strange to say, some-of .the best and, some of the worst crops, are. seen; almost side by'side, arid tho' cnly apparent cause for the contrast can be that in the case of the good crop the land has been well prepared to receive the, seed, while' in the other case less attention has been paid. to . what might be termed.tho foundation of the coming ' Quite half the crops are in stook and in one or two instances should yield quite 40 bushels.. In the immediate vicinity of Tiniaru, poor fields are to be seen, but further south some excellent crops have defied the drought. Green grass- fields are nowhere to be scon, and one wonders if live stock has suited itself to drought conditions by living on fresh air,; of' which there is an abundance.—"Timaru Post."
■ Three .days' rain in Taranaki has, says a correspondent, turned the rapid-ly-browning grass green again, the coastal district around Cape Egmont having had only showers since the beginning of December. Milk supply fras dropping seriously, as was also the tests, which is contrary to the usual experience of "less milk more .butter-fat," ono explanation of this being that the cows are very fat, and instead of putting the. fat into their milk they are putting it'on their backs. .
