SHOOTINC FATALITY NEAR WAIMATE. By Telegraph—Prees .Association. Waimate, January 22. A shooting fatality occurred, at Willowbridge, near Wainiato, on Saturday afternoon, when Artlnir Henry Woodhead, the 17-year-old son of Mr. A. T. Woodhead, a Government Insurance agent, was shot through the faco while handling a gun at Clark's farm. The deceased was alone -when it happened. His body was found by a boy named Clark. Death is supposed to have been accidental, NARROW ESCAPE I>T,OM DROWNING. Auckland, January 23. A young man named Rudolph Baeyertz, sou of Mr. C. N. Baeyertz, editor of the "Triad," got into difficulties while bathing at Uevonport. Two men jumped in to the rescue, ant} when laiKled he was unconscious. Artificial respiration proved successful.
SUICIDE OF A NEWS-RUNNER. Dunedin, January 23. An elderly man named Harry Dudficld, a newspaper runner, living in NorthEast Valley, committed suicide in a determined .fashion this aftornoon. He j complained of a headache tliis morning, , bilt went to church, and on hi 6 return lay down on his bed and had a cup of tea. His wife and daughter saw him lying down at 1.15 p.m., and five minutes later heard a report. On going into the garden they found Dudficld lying on the footpath. The top of his skull was blown off, and a fowlingpieco was lying beside him. The deceased leaves a widow and grown-up family. Ho had no financial or other worries as far as is known. , SUICIDE IN A CELL. Marton, January 22. John Harris, arrested for alleged ar. son at Marton Junction, strangled him* self in his cell at Marton during last night. Deceased tore a' strip from a blanket and hitched it on to a bolt on the outside of' the cell door. ■ THE RAILWAY ACCIDENT AT PETONE. The inquest concerning the death of Porter J. Chapman, who met his death as the result of an accident at Petone railway station, has been postponed until February 3. An accident" last week which resulted ill a broken leg befell Mrs. M'Kay, wife of Mr. A. G. M'Kay,.proprietor of the Albion Hotel, Napier. The lady was crossing a step in the course of her duties in the hotel, when she stumbled. Medical assistance was rendered by Drs. Johnson and Edgar. Mrs. M'Kay is progressing favourably.
