TRENTHAM RACES

DREADFUL CRIME IN AUCKLAND

SECOND DAY ' BIG HANDICAP WON BY BEE WELLINGTON STAKES FINE PERFORMANCE BY DESERT GOLD Record attendance, record totalisator figures, and record times—these were some of the features of the second day's events at the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Sleeting, which was continued at Trentham on Saturday. The weather was not inviting in the early morning, but what rain. there' was cleared off in time to uilow the public to catch the trains for the meeting. It is estimated that 15,000 people (including soldiers) were present, aud this is the biggest orowd 'that has yet been soou on tne course, It was a betting ■ crowd,, too, and during the day the sum of ,£48,717 10s, passed througn tne. machine, us compared wiin Ws. on tne second day ot the last Summer Meeting.

if anything the morning shower had improved" tne ; racing tracK, anil some brilliant times were recorded in uift'erent raced. Lu tUo concluding event, for instance, tno time registered by the Aus-traiiau-bred Sweet Corn is an Australasian record lor the six turlongs. The great attraction of the racing was un* uoubtedly the appearance of Mr. I'. H. Lowry's crack uiree-year-old filly. Desert Gold. Siie came out in the Wellington Stakes and pleased the public immensely by carrying her list. 31b. to victory in wonderfully smart time, continuing her unbeaten record for the current season. General opinion favoured the theory that slie .was extended at one part ot tne race,- but that she was gailqning quite within herself at the finish. Ac all events,' it was worth the trip to 'i'renthaiii to soe her win.

All started in the Hack AA T elter, which resulted in a very close finish between JLlecltiip and JJougora. Tho latter was u good iavourite,.j>ut after a sterling finish she went under % a head. At the start .Urmsby led Tricltory and Heeltap, but the last-named shot to. the front between the hall' mile and- the, entrance to tho biraight. At _ the distance llongora. ran to luui, but in the finish Emerson prevailed by a very narrow margin. Ladi i , w ' lo was tried in behind, finished well in third place.' Ballyhar and ilicino were next, and Tl'ickcry last. 1 nor to the preliminaries Heeltap was ticked by a policeman's horse, and'his foreleg was slightly cut, but it made bo tlinerciico to his galloping in tho race. . Belasco, who was killed ou_the tracks in the morning, >was the only Withdrawal Irom tho, Welter. It appears that he ■was to go a half-mile, but took charge ot his rider and crashed' into a hurdle, breaking his leg. He was shot. Orleans was more fortunate at the barrier this time. He was sent out a good iavounte, and began smartly, and with Prince Laddo and Moulu raced in the ■trout till the half-mile, where, the latter tell back. Multum in Parvo and Down were first into tiie straight, but Combustion came fast oil tho outside, and soon, put paid to the account of the leaders. JSloulu was unlucky not to beat Down tor second place. Only four owners would oppose Desert Gold in the Wellington Stakes. The filly etripped very well, and resembled a horse wanting a race. At the start she screwed a bit, and lost a little ground, as did Hyttua. The last-named was clear by himself at the course proper, but Desert Gold then put in: some telling work, and ivon by a couple of lengths at tho finish, lino Atua was a poor third. The big Handicap was a sore puzzle to backers,-and nearly every horse on' the : machine carried big money. The absolute favourite was Ladoguer with Taringamutu next choice. First Glance, - Lallxia, and Bee were equally well back- , was tried in behind. Olid bir Alba led her to tho half-mile .where the field was bunched. Shortly afterwards First Glance got on to 'ailother horse s heels and came down, «nd Adjutant fell over her. Bee, Itewi Poto, and Balboa, were prominent a furlong ' irom home, aud it'a great finish the Cap winner again prevailed by half a length from AVelcome. Nugget, with Balboa a neck away. Rewi Poto, Square Deal and Taringamutu. were the next to failish. A. AVormald, rider of First Glance, was unlucky enough to break his ankle, but the animals were uninjured. Barley Sugar was the best supported in the good betting on the' Fitziierbert Handicap, but she failed badly, and could do no better than finish fourth. The second favourite was the Eiddi ford-owned bracket (Menelaus and Mascot), and the former, jumping out well, won the whole way- lilation was always second,' and Mascot finished third, just clear of the favourite. Tho winner is a full.bfother to Noneo.

1 here were no defections from the Douro Cup. When the machine closed Wishful, Marsinah, Multiplication, and Tango were backed in that order. Jean Laddo essayed to win from end to end, but v Tango was always worrying her, and after tho last-named had disposed of the leader, Multiplication, on whom Reid had always been handy, got up on the fence, and, ridden right out, won by a neck, with Jean Laddo tho same distanco aivay, followed by Seadown, Wishful, and Marsinah. The time, lriiin. 40 2-ssec. t is a record for the race.

Pyjama was at a very short price in the Disposal Stakes, and after Otter and Chudic in turn had led to the distance, the favourite camo on the outside anil won nicely.-' Chudic was two lengths clear of Otter, and came Teviotdale and Medallist. Tho winner was sold for 275gns. Sea Lord was the only withdrawal from the Metropolitan Handicap, which was an«ther heavy betting race. Bimeter started the hottest favourite ever produced in a handicap at Trentham, but he was badly placed and could not act in the field. Sweet Corn jumped away in front, and was not headed. Flying Start finished well, but had no chance with the lightweight. The favourite was third, and Centre fourth.
