QUESTION OF CONSCRIPTION

TO-MORROW'S CONFERENCE

The conference summoned by the United Federation of Labour to consider the question of conscription will open in the Esperanto Hall, Lainbton Quay, at 10 a.m. to-morrow. So far fiftythree Labour organisations have stated their intention of being represented. These include all the Trades Councils except Dunedin, with various federations, in addition to unions. Other bodies are known to have decided in favour of sending delegates, but they have not yet forwarded official advice to the secretary of the Federation (Mr. Hiram Hunter, of Christchurch)!

The circular which was issued convening the conference asked the various unions to adopt resolutions against conscription, and while some of the Labour bodies have done so others have voted in favour- of a modified form of compulsion.
