AN ETON BOY'S FORESIGHT

: : REMARKABLE LETTER. When a boy of 15 at Eton, in 1909 (says the London "Times" of December 3); Second-Lieutenant Gareth Hamilton Fletcher, of the 3rd Grenadier Guards, who fell last January, and of whom a. biographical notice appeared ill the "Times" of October 15, wrote a remarkable letter_ to Tiis mother, in which he prophesied the war and expressed the hope that he would be old enough to fight for his country.' This letter, which is published in the current issue of the "Eton College Chronicle," is as follows: — . "I have just been reading about oui Navy in the 'Daily Graphic.' Why aro we deceived into thinking that Germany really means well to. us and is not every day disputing which is,tlie best of many ways of wiping us out of the map with-' out a struggle? We aro not really deceived, we only say so because it is a good excuse and we would rather go and have a trame of golf or have a day's iunting. What fools we are (especially, myself!). Our only chance is to wake up, and who is going to wake us up? There must be somebody. I wish he would show himself before it is' too late. And God grant I may be old enough to fight for my country when the - time comes. God help u's I" •
