HURRICANE AT SUVA
NO DAMAGE DONE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Janudry 18. The Karamu, which arrived from the Islands this morning, reports that on tho voyage from New Zealand to Suva she encountered a severe hurricane, but sustained no damage. . The Waimarino, iAtua, and Sierra also felt the full force of tho hurricaue, but suffered no injury. Writing privately to a friend in Wellington in regard to a reference' to the Christinas function at the Children's Hospital here, Mr. Hugli J. Ward, of Sydney, writes: "I have a deep interest in the Wellington Children's Hospital, aifd l hope some day to visit Wellington again and take a look at the place, for, as you know, I have never seen the hospital, but judging from the reports it appears to compare favourably with anything south of the Line, in ths general efforts one makes in life there nro little spots that stand out well in endeavouring to do something that is Rood, and this spot down in Wellington is one of them." For the first time in the colonial V.is- \ tory of the Salvation Army the honour of the .Military Cross has been conferred on one of its members. The recipient is Chaplaiv-Captain Alfred Greene, who has for 20 years been associated with Salvation Army work in New Zealand, Ho held the rank of adjutant in the organisation, and, prior to his leaving with the main body of tho Exneditionary Foreo for Envpt, was in charge of the Workmen's Hfme in Wellington. He was recognised as an able organiser, and i.t is stated that it- was on account of his abilities in this direction that the Military Cross was conferred up» him. His work was chiefly done in Alexandria, where bo organised a_ system in connection with hospital visitation, and also rendered valunhle services in other directions. Chaplnin-Cnn-tiin Greene was under firo when the Turks made, the attack, on the Suez Canal in February last. The vicar of Pahiatua (the Rev. L. H. Fenn), who had a valunblo watch and chain stolen some time ago, received is a Christmas present from three members of the consreiiation a handsome silver watch, a gold chain, and a lieantifnlgold cross, states tlie "Herald." The Dunlop Rubber Company have received tho following notification from their head offico in Melbourne, dated January 17: —"E. Bayles lowered tho ■ Launcnston-Hobart motor-cycle record 121 miles, two hours thirty-six minutes «n Dunlops. He had one fall and one puncture." Bros. J. Winskill and J. Langley have been appointed to represent the Masterton Oddfellows' Lodge at the district meeting, to be held in Wellington on February 20-
