ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
ACCIDENT ON THE DUCHESS. DECK-HAND SEVERELY CRUSHED. William Bryce, a dcck-hand on the Eastbourpe Council's ferry steamer Duchess met with a painful accident at 'the Ferry Wharf shortly before 6 o'clock last evening. 'The steamer had just arrived from Day's Bay, and was being berthed, sjnd,- following, the usual custom, Bryco prepared to jump ashore immediately the steamer touched the wharf, to take the lines, and place them over the posts, and make fast. As ho stepped ashore for this purpose lie slipped, and fell between the Duchess and :the wharf. The steamer at tile same time swung closer in, and pinned with' increasing pressure the unfortunate man against a stringer. His agonised cries- immediately drew, attention to his plight', ' ' and the captain rang for the vessel to go astern and the lines to be eased. As Bryce had been pinned near the bow, the pressure relaxed as the Duchess backed, and the man was lifted on to the wharf. Dr. Henry was summoned, and found that Bryce was severely crushed in the region of the pelvis.► The injured man was removed to the Hospital. ——- C - ' ■ ; DROWNING CASE. New Plymouth, January 15. An inquest on tho body of Jensen, the second mato of the schooner C. S. Holmes, who was recently found drowned in the harbour, was opened this morning, but was adjourned after taking the evidence of the first Aiate, who stated that Jensen was the worse for liquor when he last saw him. DAIRY FARMER COMMITS SXJI- . CIDE. Carterton, January 16. AVilliam Charles Zabel,' ajjed 43, a dairy farmer, committed suicide on Saturday night. He leaves a wife and five children.
