OUR ALLIES THE RUSSIANS
An appeal has come from tho Victoria league, London, for assistance for Russian prisoners in Germany. Tho case of Russian prisoners is a peculiarly hard one. Russia has suffered terribly in the struggle, not .merely in the lives lost in the fighting on the Eastern front, but by the devastation wrought in Poland, and the thousands of families rendered homeless and driven away from their means of subsistence. So great' has been the drain on tho Russian people, that they are not in a position to do much in the way of supplying money or food or clothing to ameliorate the harsh lot of the Russian prisoners in German hands. So it is that the Victoria League and other organisations, recognising the great services that Russia has rendered to the cause of the Allies, are endeavouring, to relieve the situation so far as lies in their power. We cannot do much; there are many calls on our purges, but every pound helps, and . New Zealand should be ( able to do something. The advice received by the \ ictoria_ League from its governing council in London is that the assistance sent can be forwarded on through an agency created by the Russian Ambassadress and a committee in London. As the requirements are specially urgent while the winter is on, it is proposed to cable any contributions received up to the 29th ihs'tant. We shall be pleased to forward on any donations sent to this office.
