THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS IBt Glencob.l Owners and trainers havo plenty to engage their attention to-day. Acceptances for the first day's handicaps at the Wellington meeting must be made by 9 p.m. to-night, and at the same hour entries for the Trial Plate and Disposal Stakes will close. Acceptances for the Foxton meeting are also due, as are entries for tho Uisborno meeting. Owners of trotting horses engaged at the Wellington Meeting on January 21 should note that acceptances close to-day wiin Mr. j;. w. Short (secretary), Petone. The Manawatu Trotting Club will hold its second totalisator meeting on tho Awapuni racecourso on February 19. An excellent programme 1 has been arranged, and good entries are expected. Nominations close on Holiday, 'January 31, at 10 p.m. Ihe Whangarei meeting will be concluded to-day. With the Messrs. Riddiford increasing ™eir team by the addition of several yearlings, it is more than probable that some of the lesser lights will be sold. Amongst these arc Trickery and Peroxide, who have so far failed to make their owners any return on their purchase money. At Trentham yesterday morning Taringaniutu, carrying Roy Reid, or about her Cup weight (7st. 71b.), rail a mile on the tan track in lrain. 42isec. It was a particularly pleasing effort. R. J. Mason has engaged Emperador and Bimeter at tho Egmont meeting, which takes place nest month. Tho Yaldhurst and Chokebore etablee will also be represented at the same meeting. It is announced that Mr. W. G. Stead's horses, Gold Painting, SasamolT, and Eligible, who competed successfully at Ellerslie, will not be seen out at Trentham. Snub is still a firm fancy for the Wellington Cup, with Taringamutu .next, and then Itinaldo, Welcome Nugget, and Rewi Poto in that order. The English-bred two-year-old colt, Jack Jellicoe, owned by Mr. D. M'Leod. of Waipukurau, is now trained by J. Sceats who also prepares Zeus and Tavistock for tjie same owner. The Auckland horseman, P. Bradev, arrived at Trentham yesterday to fulhl engagements at the forthcoming meeting. The District Committee of the Hawke's Bay Jockey will meet this afternoon to hear the appeal against the disqualification of Croesus and party. Tho Provocation filly Privation, owned by Mr. W. E: Bidwell, is at present under offer to a local owner. The Rototawa sportsman is quitting this filly, and probably Deviation, to make room for youngsters coming ,to hand. If Deviation is not sold he will be tried over fences in the winter, as he is an expert leaper. Several of the progeny of Provocation have shown their ability to gallop, and one of them, in Gang Awa', defeated a smart. field of sprinters after being out of the paddock a matter of a few weeks only. Subsequently-she was sold to Mr. F. S. Easton for 500gns. Her owner, ,Mr. Jas. Bull, always sells when ho considers he gets a fair price. After Master Lupin had run third in the National Hurdles and given promise of sooii winning a jumping event his owner was offered and accepted 300gns. for the Lupin gelding, whose present owner is as yet without a return on his outlay. Discussing Snub's chance iu the Wellington Cup, a southern writer says:—"A great factor in his favour is that Warstop, with whom he worked continuously, is out of action, and he will not have the lieart-breakiug gallops' he has been putting up with her since the early part of the season. This may result in linn buckin" up, and if sent for the W clung- \ ton Cup-should be found running a good race." An Auckland writer holds that Snub's running in thd Derby proved that he should havo won the Auckland Cup had his rider been able to do him justice.
