MASTERTON NOTES
Mr. A'. P. Whatman is arranging for the holding of a- clay pigeon match on the Masterton Showgrounds at an early date, jn which, men from the Tauherenikau Camp will be invited to take part. A ti'i-weokly mail service is being established between Masterton, To Wharau, and Land's End. The contractors are Messrs. Hood Bros., of Carterton. The Wairarapa' Centre of the N.Z. Athletic and Cycling Union met on •Saturday night, and made arrangements for the animal conference of Qominion delegates, which is to be held here on Thursday night. The annual meeting of the Wellington Slaughtermen's Union was held in Masterton on Saturday. A quantity of business affecting tlie working of tlie union was transacted. Mr. C. Vincent was elected president for the ensuing year, ap'd Mr. J. M'Donald vice-presi- 1 dent. Tlie office of secretary is retained by Mr. M. J. Reardon. Blight has caused a good deal of damage to potato crops in the Masterton district this season. The. Wairarapa War Relief Committee lias purchased a motor-car for a Masterton returned 6oldier, to enable him to carry out a certain mail contract. At a meeting of the General Committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association on Saturday last, members subscribed £100 in the room towards special prizes for the forthcoming show. It was decided to nominate a queen for the forthcoming Friendly Society Carnival.
