MAGISTRATE'S COURT
BEER FOR A SOLDIER AN INFORMATION DISMISSED Mr. D. G. A.''Cooper, S.M., presided at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, when a saddler, named Robert Ivent, was charged .with supplying liquor to a soldier in a hotel at Upper Hut-t for consumption off tlio premises. The information was laid under tho War Regulations Act. SubT nspector Mackinnon prosecuted, while Mr. E. M, Beechey appeared for Kent, who pleaded not guilty. According to the police evidence, Kent, at tho request of the soldier, had procured a bottle of beer, which was found ill tho possession of the soldier while the latter was still on the premises. The Magistrate, without calling on the defence, dismissed tho information, as he "was of opinion that the evidence did not show that the liquor was intended for consumption off the premises. THEFT. Nathan Hendrick appeared on remand on a charge of stealing a handbag, valued at 10s., the property of George Bravoman. The accused pleaded not guilty, but, after hearing the evidence, tho Magistrate was satisfied' that a conviction should be recorded. A fine of 20s. was imposed, the alternative being seven days' imprisonment. MAINTENANCE. Florence Grace Ward was granted summary separation from her husband, Frederick Valentine Ward, who was ordered to pay los. per week as maintenance for his wife. Defendant was also ordered to pay £1 Is. solicitor's fee. Compainant's application for custody of the children was refused.. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for complainant, while Mr. E. K. Kirkcaldio appeared for the defendant. For disobedienco of a maintenance order (arrears £2 75.), William Henry Wiggins was fined 205., in default to undergo three days' imprisonment. OTHER CASES.
Lilian Jukes was arrested for drunkenness on Saturday shortly after her release on a similar chnrgc. By tlio time she readied t'lie lock-up, she had additional charges of obscene language and assault preferred against her, • the arresting constable being the victim of tlio assault. She was convicted on all three charges yesterday, and fined amounts totalling £5. Default was fixed at one month's imprisonment. A young wom&n, named Edith Conroy, who had escaped frqin the Salvation Army Home, where she ivas being detained by order of the Court, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment. The Magistrate directed that the woman should be returned to the Home at the expiry of the sentence. Isidore Jacobus, a frequent offender for drunkenness, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for a similar offence, 'and prohibited. The Magistrate warned accusod that he was qualifying for a term of detention at the Inebriates' Home. John Sullivan pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and was fined 405., in default to undergo seven days' -imprisonment. Violet Paton, for drunkenness, was fined 10s., with 'the option of forty-eight hours' imprisonment. She consented to a prohibition order being issued against her. Robert Henderson was also fined 10s. for drunkenness, and _ several first offenders were dealt with in the usual manner.
