The' Asliburton branch of the New Zealand Fanners' Union recently advertised asking farmers who were likely to be short of harvest hands to forward their names. Up to the present the secretary has not received a single application, states the correspondent of the "Lyttelton Times," which shows that a shortage is not anticipated in the country. ■ Mr. J. Kerrigan, M.H.C.V.S., tho Agricultural Department's veterinary Gupervisor for the South' Island, has been visiting Kaikonra for the purpose of further investigating the unusual mortality that has occurred among' the cattle of Messrs. J. Smart and G. Eaton —something like 30 head having died during the last three weeks (states the G'liristcliurch "Sun"). Two Asliburton threshing-mill owners (states the "Guardian") intend to commence threshing operations at once in the district near the coast._ It i:i stated that tho crops there have ripened rapidly during the past week, and that harvesting on several farms is in full swing. Recently the Asliburton branch of the Farmers' Union, in keeping with other branches in the Dominion, advertised advising farmers who were likely to lie. 6hort of men for harvesting ta send in their names.
