FARMERS' TRIP THROUGH CANTERBURY
A 'party of three TVinton farmers spent Christmas week'in a car ride to Christchurch, through Central Otago and Mackenzie Country, says tho Timaru "Herald." One of tho party giving an account of the trip 6ays of the Canterbury Plains: "Leaving Timaru at 2.45 p.m., wc made for'Christchurch. It was a most monotonous journey, and it was a disheartening sight to witness tho burnt-up and parched condition of the great plains. Ejtock were light and poor in condition, the sheep being black and dirty-looking'on account of tho dust- , topped ■ country over which tho poor animals have to hunt for the wherewithal to exist. To a farmer from Southland the country was a posit"' B eyesore. The crops were poorly filled, and in some instances stock were being utilised in eating them off." Summing up' ; their observations he says; "It certainly was a most interesting journey; ■it was also an education; buttlie main result was that it made us think bettor of Southland than we had ever done before." ■ 1
