MENTAL DEFECTIVES.

STATEMENT BY HON. J. HANAN. : By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, January 10. Interviewed on tho subject of mental defectives to-night, the Hon. J. Hanan, Minister of Education,' said that Mr. Benstead, Principal of the Otekaike Institution, had furnished him with a re-' port based on an examination as to the suitability of applicants for admission to the school. The report' showed that in the North Island 75 cases had been examined, and in the South Island a similar number. There are about 300 more cases to be examined. Of the 150 cases examined 46 are suitable for treatment at Otekaike. Of the number yet to be examined probably 'a third will _be suitable for treatment-. Tho Minister proceeds north to-morrow.
