FRENCH WAR EXPENDITURE
RAISING THE MONEY. Some interesting figures are available as to the sums of money that liavo been raised by France during the war up to November 11. The "lions de la Defense Nationals" have yielded 8,320,000,000 francs (roughly £300,000,000), and tho "Obligations de la. Defense Nationale" 2,735,000,000 (roughly £100,000,000), making a total of some £400,000,006, which has been subscribed' in France. In addition to this about £50,000,000 has been subscribed abroad, and tlie Banque de France.has advanced rather more than £350,000.000' to tho Government. In other words, the Stflto revenues have received since the beginning of tho war up to Octobcr 31 somo !20 milliards of francs, or approximately £800,000,000, apart from tlio normal resources of tho Budget. In England, out of an increased expenditure of £1.700,000,000, two-ninths have been met by ordinary taxation and the balance of seven-ninths by means similar to those of France, tho corresponding sums loaned by Franco • and beilijs >5605,00u,000 uud ill,.aoomooQ* • '■
