The situation on the South Russian front is of the utmost military and political importance. . ' _ The fall of Czernowitz, the capital of tho Bukovina Province, has impressed the whole of the Balkans, but particularly Rumania. It has deprived the enemy of an important strategic railway, and is menacing the line to Kolemea. The Russians are rapidly following up their success, and driving in a wedgo. Desperate, battles are being foUght on two hundred miles of front. General Mackensen is unable to think of Salonika whilst fighting desperately to resist Russia. • Bucharest states ihat Russia is pouring in troops on a colossal scale. The Tsar is personally commanding, ■ , The Aiistro-Germans are flinging ill'reinforcements, and are withdrawing troops from the Balkans and Italy. Austria admits that portion of Czernowitz las been' evacuated. Russian airmen are daily bombing the town. The successes deprive the onemy of the. Czernowitz-Zaleszczyki railway. A Russian communique says: "Weseized further positions north-eastwards of Czernowitz. There were heavy enemy losses," " • ONE THOUSAND PRISONERS • AND FOUR MACHINE-GUNS CAPTURED. London, January 6, 4.10 p.m. .The High Commissioner reports:— _ _ Petrograd reports: North-east of Czernowitz fighting continues. Over 1000 taken prisoners; also'four machine guns captured. GERMAN DETACHMENT FORCED- TO RETIRE. Berlin, January 8. Official.—On the/ Riga-Dvinsk fro lit a German reconnoitring detachment withdrew before a superior Russian force. , • ' In Volhyniii tho Germans dislodged the defenders from ono of the advanced Russian positions. RUSSIANS CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS. (Rec. January 7, 8.60 p.m.) Petrograd, January 7. A Russian communique says: "We occupied the cemetery at Czartorysk, drivin" back the enemy and making further progress, also establishing a position in tho sectors captured near Czernowitz. The enemy is using dumdum bul- - lets to stop the Russians. We took the cemetery at Czartorysk. The enemy's attempts at the offensive in Bojan were repulsed.
