The deceased, who is a nephew of Mr. C. E. Isdale," which occurred suddenly on Monday night, at the advanced age of 86 years, removes yet another from the ranks of the early settlers of North Otago. Mr, Isdale, who was a native of Perthshire, came out to the Dominion in the ship Alpine in the late 'fifties, arriving in Port Chalmers. After a few weeks' residence in Dunedin he went on to Oamaru, work, ing for some years as shepherd on the Bairudderv Station, and on fencing contracts on'the Ard go wan Estate, where ho eventually became a foreman. At the first land sale in Oamaru, Mr. Isdale purchased tho fifty acres at Weston, which he occupied at the time of his death. He later, took over a section of 300 acres at Teaneraki, which he.farmed successfully .for some years. Deceased was a recognised authority on fruit culture, and did much to promote the welfare of the industry in North Otago, being one of tho first members■ of the North Otago Horticultural Society. He was for many years a member of the Waiareka Road Board, and held_ a seat nn the. Waitaki County Council from 1887 to 1896, retiring in the last-men-tioned year. Mrs. Isdale pre-deceased her husband recentlv. He leaves fivo sons, Mr. T. Isdale (Western Australia), Mr. John Isdale (Weston), and Messrs. David, Alfred, and William Isdale, who are at present farming in the North Wand, and two daughters, Miss Isdale (Weston) and Mrs. Gill (Tur.-uiaki),
