THE TURF
NEW YEAR CARNIVAL
WAIRARAPA MEETING CUP WON BY TARINGAMUTU. (From Our Special Correspondent J Carterton, January 1. The Wairarapa meeting was opened today in perfect wcatner a,.d iwtuio'u crowd, which included a big sprinkling ot soldiers, somo 2(300 marching m to the music of the camp baud. During the afternoon the president of the club, Mr. W. E. Bidwill, appealed to the crowd t. hand over their binoculars to the officers who were leaving for the front. Tile day was enlivened by numerous selections played by the camp band. The totulisator, handled <£20,415, as against .616,188 last year. There was a big field in tho Maiden Hack Race, but tire public gauged the form fairly correctly by sending braenn . out favourite with Trickery next in demand. Miss I'au led to the bottom of the straight, with Braomore and Trickery handy. ■ The favourite then took charge, and won nicely. Heeltap finished fast on the fence, and beat Trickery for second place. Miss l'au was fourth". Another solid order in Botanist prevailed in the Tuliitarata Handicap, but only after an exciting finish with Master Achilles and Sea Lord. Heads only separated tile trio as the post was reached. Hymettius. had a big break across the bottom stretch, but he compounded badly, and Botanist got up on the fence. Master Achilles and Sea Lord challenged at this distance, and a most exciting finish resulted as above. King of Athol was the only withdrawal from the Rimutaka Handicap, which was a good even betting event. Tho winner turned up in Jean Laddo,' who was tried in behind and got the distance well. Otter made tho running from Wailand and Roseland, but at the bottom of the straight Jean Laddo and Roumania collared them. Jean Laddo won handily from Otter, with Roumania a neck away, and Mareinah fourth. Montana was the favourite in tlie Cup, but he cut up badly and was' never dangerous. Taringamutu hopped off in front, aud despite a strong challenge by Immer from the bottom of the straight, the bay mare won nicely. Merrie Gain and Immer were prominent to the turn, where the tonner fell back beaten. Tiie iavourite was in the rear in the early part of the race, and he ran into fourth place at the home turn, but it was a short-lived effort, and ho died away again in the straight. Quinn's Post was withdrawn from the Nursery Handicap, leaving eight runners. Rose Pink ajid Struggle jumped away the best, and led Mascot to the turn, where Lady General appeared. Rose Pink was the best-conditioned, and ran home a winner by a length from Struggle, with Lady General close up. Mascot was fourth An outsider in Arrahna won the Pukin Hack Handicap like a good one. She-was not well placed at the start, but was in command before a furlong had been covered, >ind from thin point was not headed. King of Athol was a good, favourite, but though, prominent at the turn he failed, to finish on. Nenno led for a tiffie, but she quickly retired. Need began to show up at the turn, but she could not reach Arrahna. Manu, was a fair third, ana lung ot Athol next. Another very fine-finish took place in the Reynolds Handicap, between Master Achilles, Red Book, Want, and Botanist, who passed the judge in a cluster. The numbers were hoisted as above. Master Achilles and Botanist led to the turn, where the other pair joined iii, and a great struggle took place right to the post. Marsinan, who had started earlier in the day. succeeded in winning the Hack Walter Handicap from Braemore, who had a penalty.of 71b.' Arlington, wjio was well supported, failed to leave the mark.
