: HOSPITAL SHIP MAHENO DUE HERE THIS MORNING By Association. Auckland, January 1. Tlio hospital .ship Maheno arrived in tlte harbour shortly before 5 o'clock this morning,' anchoring in tho stream. Tho vessel displayed many signs of tho buffeting sho received during her useful work of tho past months. She was the centre of attraction as she lay in tho harbour until after twelve o'clock, when she moved slowly up' to her berth at tho Queen's Wharf. When the Maheno first achored in tho stream Surgeon-General Henderson, Director of Medical Servicos, together with Colonel Purdy and Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Military Hospitals, went on board, accompanied by Captain Hope Lewis, Inspector of Military Hospitals, and Dr. Sharmaii, Port Health Officor. Some time later His Excellency the Governor went out accompanied by the Minister of Public Health, General Robin, Colonel Hume, and attendant officers. Moamvhile a thorough inspection of the men was being made with a view to isolating those whose freedom ashore was considered to bo a danger to tho community. During tho morning one of the Walsh brothers' seaplanes flew up tho harbour cn two occasions, and circled gracefully over the Maheno, the flights extending over 'several hours. About noon tho Prime Minister and the Hon. James .Allen arrived on the wharf. and watched tho hospital ship come alongside. They then went aboard. Owing to various reasons the classification of the men aboard seems I to be somewhat confused, and to-night it was' impossible to get an accurate statement as to the. names of those isolated, and thoso not coming under this restriction. An approximate estimate is as follows :— One hundred and ninety-nine enteric convalescents to be landed at Auckland. Cot cases—For Auckland 9, for Wellington 2, . for Canterbury 1, for Otago 6. Hospital cases (not cot cases)— Auckland 13, Wellington .10, Canterbury 5, Otago 12. Convalescent cases—Auckland 18, Canterbury 15, Wellington 21, Otago 10. In addition, two nurses w:ho contracted enteric aboard landed here. 130 MEN ISOLATED. Auckland, January 2. In the event of there being a break between the tying up of the Maheno at the Taranaki Street Wharf , and the reception at the Town Hall, His AA rorship the Mayor intends asking owners of motor-cars to take tho soldiers for a drive. If there is not time for a drive before the reception, Mr. Luke hopes to make arrangements for a run round after the reception. His "Worship remarked last evening that owing to the New Year holiday he had not-been able to communicate with representative men in tho city 'and district, and ask them to be present at tlio reception, but he trusted that they would take this intimation as sufficient, and do their utmost to be present.
