A considerable body of'soldiers, backed by larrikin element, smashed the windows of Erpf Bros.' premises; also three Greek wine-shops. Strong military pickets and police restored order after several hours of rioting, a few receiving rough handling. Other premises were barricaded in preparation .for a threatened attack. . (Rec.' January 2, 5.5 p.m.) • Perth, January 2. The soldiers' rioting has continued. They visited hotels and shops, and demanded drinks and goods, to be charged to .Lord Kitchener. If refused, they threatened to smash the shops. They' raided two, hotels. The picket charged the rioters with fixed bayonets. The authorities closed the hotels at 9 o'clock which eased the situation; WHARF LUMPERS. AGAIN HOLD UP WHEAT SHIPS. (Rec. January 2. 10.45 a.m.) Melbourne, January 2. The wharf lumpers declined to con-tinue-loading wheat ships, though the I demand for 2s. per hour was conceded under protest. The liabilities totalled £425,700, and the assets £176,747. ■ BIG FIRE IN VICTORIA. DAMAGE £20,000. (Rec.- January 2, 10.45 a.m.) Sydney, January 2. A fire at Collarendarbi destroyed Ma* louf's large stores and the Royal Hotel. The damage is estimated at £20,000. I . TASKANIAN LEGISLATION. (Rec. January 2, 5.5 p.m.) . Hobart, January 2. The Now Year was ushered in with legislation closing hotels at 10 p.m., and restricting gambling to totalisators.
