INEFFECTIVE BOMBARDMENT
Mr. Granville Fortesque, the American war correspondent, who saw somo of the fighting at the Dardanelles as a spectator on the Turkish side, states in his recently published book, "Russia, the Balkans, and the Dardanelles" :— "One of the most astounding features of the Gallipoli fighting is the disproportion of the losses suffered by the Turks to the amount of ammunition expended by the Fleet. This is duo to the fact that thenaval shells are of peculiar construction, especially contrived for piercing armour. I havo seen the fragments of shell fired from tho main batteries of the Queen Elizabeth. From actual count, theso shells seldom break into more than ten pieces. Tho nose, the base, ajid tho shell proper is rent into eight largo bits. In consequence, unless such a shell explodes direotly _in an occupied trenoh," tho .damage it may, inflict is small."-
