VIOLENT BATTLE IN GALICIA AUSTRIAN LINES SMASHED. By Telegraph—Press Assoclatlon-CoDyriElit (Reo. January 2, 5.5 p.m.) Paris, January 1. The ."Temps" says the most violent battle is raging iii Western' (? Eastern) Galicia. The .Russians have succeeded in smashing the Austrian lines and forcing von Botkmer to retreat on certain sections of that front. ENEMY ACCOUNTS. ATTACKS .REPULSED. (Roc. January 2, 5.5 p.m.) Amsterdam, January 1., Austrian accounts .state that the Russians concentrated two hundred guns and three divisions on a front of three miles. There was a preliminary bombardment of thirty-six hours. The Austrians claim to have repulsed twenty-tivo assaults, mostly desperate hand-to-hand 'fighting.' A Berlin official message states that the Russians were repulsed in Eastern Galicia owing to an effective flanking movement. DESPERATE ENGAGEMENTS. (Rec. January 2, 5.5 p.m.) ' Peirograd, January 1.
