"MEN WERE MAGNIFICENT,"

CHTJNTJK BAHR ENGAGEMENT. Under date of September 30 a NewZealand officer writes from Gallipoli:— "I left Anzac on August 15, completely run down. I had had 16 weeks of in:essant hard work, and continually under fire. I am now just about fit to go back again. I managed to hang on long enough to take part in the big advanco which commenced on August 6. I was also in tho attack on Chumtk Balir on August 8. We took the position (a hill crest) and held it for about 21 hours, when we were relieved. Wo went forward to the attack 700 strong (I am spoaking of the Wol'ington Battalion, which led the attack). Only three or four officers, including myself, and about 40 men returned uninjured. It was tlio severest fighting we have yet had—more severe than the landing and Cape Helles advance. The men, as usual, were magnificont. It was at Chitnuk Bahr that we lost our beloved commander, Colonel ilalone. The scene of the fight was awful, our dead lying closo together, with dead Turks close to then, and severely wounded men every here and there. Late in the day we were reduced to a mero handful, and had to withstand repeated determined rushes by the enemy, who showed great bravery. Of courso we were vastly outnumbered. The enemy Were attacking us from both flanks, and snipers were busy in our rear. How wo held on I do not know. Had tho men wavered all would have been lost. But Wo liave such faith in the men that the thought of that never troubles us." For Children's Hacking Cough at Nighi Woods' Great Peppermint .Cure. U. 64,*
