THE MAORI FORCES

WAIKATOS AT LAST PLACATED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, December 29. As a. result of the meeting held at Mercer on Christmas Day, at which Dr. Pomare was present, it is probable that a fighting force of 1000 Natives for service abroad will be raised by the Waikatos, which, though the strongest tribe in New Zealand, has thus far provided 110 men for Maori contingents. It is stated that King Rata, who lias hitherto kept conspicuously aloof from the recruiting movement, is now interesting himself in the movement to secure a good contingent of AYaikatos.
