Corporal R. H. Greville, of the .12th Reinforcements, now in camp at Trenthani, a member of the staff of the Pub. lie Trust Office, has received notice that lie has passed the second section of the LL.B. examin^ion.
Archdeacon Boyce, for twenty-four years president of the New South Wales Alliance, has resigned that office. In his farewell speech he stated that tho year 1916 would be the most strenuous in the entire history of the movement. ' The death is reported from Sydney of Mr. W. R. George, aged 60, who was very well known in athletic circles, and was called "the father of cycling'! in Sydney.
Mr. D. Robertson attended a meeting'of the Hospital Board yesterday afternoon' (the first lie-has been present at- for a considerable time), and was heartily welcomed and congratulated on his recovery from his 'recent illness.
At the meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawn' Tennis Association, tho president (Mr. H, M. Gore) extended tho congratulation! of the association to Captain M. E. Denniston, a. member of the committee, who is to leave New Zealand _ as Adjutant-Quartermaster of. the hospital ship Maheiio. He complimented Mm on the step he had taken, and said that Captain Denniston took with him the best wishes of the'committee for a safe return. On behalf qf tho members of the committee Mt. Gore presented Captain Denniston with a loose-leaf pocketbook as a memento of the esteem in which he is held.. Captain Denniston is to join the Ma-heno after the New Year holidays. "* > . The gift, was a case of pipes and a, photograph of the delegates and officers of the association.
Senior-Sergeant J. W. M. Dart, formerly in charge of the Police Training Depot at Mount Cook, _ has been appointed gaoler at Dunedin. Mr. Thomas Hewetsou, lof Upper Moutere, has been appointed by the Minister' of Lands to bo a member of the Revaluation of Land Committee of the Nelson district. ,
The esteem in which Mr. O. W. Chilean, who retired on superannuation some months ago from the position of manager of the Te Aro branch of tlie Bank of New Zealand, is held by the mercantile community, was shown on Wednesday evening,- when a, number of business men met in the Royal Oak Hotel and presented him with, a chcqiio for a substantial amount, in recognition_ of Lis uniform courtesy and consideration to the bank's customers during his long tenure of office. Mr. W. H. Bennett, who presided, spoke of Mr. Ohilman's ability, tact, and kindly disposition. Messrs. Charles Stewart, Donald M'Lean, John Wright, F. Rowe. W. A. J. Dutch, A-. Levy, J. W. Wallace, and W. E. Woods also paid similar tributes, and Mr. Chilman's health was toasted.
The Governor has been advised that His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to confer the Military Cross on Captain Tbos. Ralph Eastwood, of the Rifle Brigade ("Prince Consort's Own"), formerly A.D.C. to His Excellenoy, for conspicuous gallantry and ability during operations on Gallipoli Pensinsula on August 6 and 7 last. Captain Eastwood guided the night advance of his brigade wit'h skill and resource, especially when the head of the column came under the enemy's fire. Owing to the severity of the opposition the advance came gradually to a standstill, and at this point Captain Eastwood rendered very valuable service in reorganising tho column, and thus enabled it to continue the forward movement.
In the Recruiting Office at tlio Town Hall last night; tho Recruiting Committee made a presentation to Captain Barclay, l their chairman and cliief officer, who for over two months has attended at the room all day and every evening. Since the office was opened 1501 men have enlisted through this office. Professor Brown eulogised Captain Barclay for his excellent work, his unvarying courtesy and tact in dealing with men, and his admirable mannor of conducting tho business. 'Other membors of tlio committee, Dr. Newman and Messrs. Spragg, Marchant, and 'Atkinson, warmly praised Captain Barclay's work. Captain Barclay acknowledged the compliment in a fitting speech in reply. Mr. B. R. Gardener, of Levin, has resigned his seat 011 the Wellington District Hospital Board owing to pressure of other duties. The resignation was accepted yesterday with regret, and Mr. Gardener's work was eulogised.
