WELLINGTON HONOURED LIEUT. ATHOL HUDSON SELECTED,
The committee to whom is entrusted tho select-ion of the Rhodes Scholar met yesterday at Government House. His Excellency the Earl of Liverpool presfded, his co-adjutors being the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout), Mr. Justice Dennistoil, Professor' Egerton (Auckland University College), Professor Adamson (Victoria College), Professor Wall (Canterbury College), and Professor Malcolm (Otago University). The candidates put forward on behalf of tho four university colleges were:—' Wellington.—Mr. Atliol Hudson. Auckland. —Mr. F. A. Airey„B.A. Canterbury—Mr.. Arthur Ponder. . Otago.—Mr. J. G. Anderson (Invercargill). '
All the candidates were present.before the committee, with the exception of Mr. Ponder, who left New Zealand with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Lord Liverpool's Own) for service with the i'orces abroad. '
After very full consideration the committee ultimately selected as Rhodes Scholar for 1915, Lieut. Athol Hudson, tho candidate of Victoria College, Wellington.
The new Rhodes Scholar Is at present a member of the Expeditionary Force I in training at Trentham, holding _ tho rank of second lieutenant. He is 21 years of age. He was educated at Nelson College from 1903 to 1906, and at the Waitaki. Boys' High School, Oamaru, from .1907 to 1911 (inclusive). Since leaving school lie has been an undergraduate of. Victoria. University College up to this present year. ' In 1907 lio passed the Senior Free Place examination, and in 1908, at tho age of 14 years, he obtained a Senior Education Board (Otago) Scholarship, being fourth on the list, tho scholarship being open to candidates under the age of 16 years. In that year also he passed the'matriculation examination of tho New Zealand University. In 1911 lie was dux of the Waitaki Boys' High School, and obtained sixth .place on the list of junior university scholars. In 1912, at the Victoria University College, he passed the first scction of the B.Sc. degree in, mathematics (pure and applied), chemistry, and French. Early in August, 1914, he enlisted for service and went with the Advanco Expeditionary Force to Samoa, where he held tho rank of corporal. Ho was granted third year terms by the Professorial Board in Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology. He had entered for the Senior University Scholarship in Chemistry and Physics, but being absent from New Zealand he was unable to sit for tho examination for those_ scholarships, or ! for the final examination for the B.Sc. degree. On returning from Samoa in April of this year he again attended lectures and classes at Victoria. Collego until July,.when he went into training with the non-commissioned officers of the Eighth Reinforcements, ' and was aiven the temporary appointment of sorgeant. 'In October last he was awarded place in the examination for first appointments . to commissions in the Expeditionary Forces. The examination was open to non-commissioned officers of the Eighth Reinforcements, add there were some 60 candidates.. lio h(!s cincn received his commission as second lieutenant. On -the athletic side, Lieu(i. Hudson also has a very fine rccord, being a rccognised first-class long-distance runner, whilst in swimAning, boxine. football, and crickct lie has- honourable records.
