MONTHLY MEETING, ■ '& meeting of the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce was lield yesterday. The president 1 (Mr. C. M. Luke) was in the chair. The president reported that he was in communication with the Prime Min- . ister concerning the fixing of a date on which he could recelvo a deputation from the Associated Chambers of Commerce on the subjects of closcr settlement of land, and tlio employment of , discharged disabled soldiers. Mr., Luke hoped that an early date would bo arranged. Pour months leave of absence was granted to Mr. L. Ashcroft Edwards, and members extended to him-season-able good wishes'for a pleasant and profitable journey.,. • Replying, Mr. Edwards said that lie left the Patriotic Industrial Exhibition venture with - deep regret. The financial success of the Exhibition was now certain! The estimated expenditure was £406, aud the receipts, now 'assured, were £429. The task ahead was to get the crowds there, and to teach them the lesson for which tho exhibition was inaugurated—the importance of buying British, goods and paying the debts of Britain instead of her enemies' debts. However, arrangements had been made to give the people • a good, free show, and the people of Wellington liked a free show. He expressed grateful appreciation of the work of his colleague, Mr. J. F. 'Atkins, in organising. Mr. Edwards said he was going away on a business trip, but if he could he would bo only too glad to do anything possible for the Chamber in Canada and tho "United States. A letter was received from the Canterbury Chamber of Commorce, requesting the co-operation of tho Chamber in remedying delays in transit of telegrams. between the North and South Islands. The chairman and Mr. James Reid were appointed to interview tho Secretary of the Post Office oh the matter. On the motion, of the chairman a resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. Nicholas RcM was carricd.
