Certain people, in . spite of warnings to ithe contrary, continue to post matches to soldiers at tli9 front.A few days ago smoko was seen coming from a parcel at tho Wellington. General Post Office; a quick inspection showed that a box of matches (intended for a soldier far away) had ignited. Relatives and friends of the fighters have a nation that the men are usually short of matches. Gifts of that kind have to be sent as freight, not as portion of the mails. It is not desirable .to send matches in any shape or form to the front. If matches are put among mails tho peril may threaten precious lives as well as property; it is not impossible to havo a serious fire in a ship at sea as the result of a mistaken act of kindness —the postage of matches. This is so important that the Depart-' mont has decided to display big posters, reminding the publio about tho penalties if the warnings are not heeded.Section. 85' of the Post and Telegraph! Act states"Every person who puts into any post office or into any post offico letter box or pillar box, fire, or match,' or light, or any explosive, dangerous or destructive substance or fluid, or any matter or thing likely tol injure any postal packet, or any person, is liable on indictment to imprisonment; for any term not exceeding seven years* with or without hard labour.;'
