As the .school began two years ago .witli about 'ten pupils, the increase in numbers is yory gratifying to the proprietors, since it shows that the college has become established in public confidence. The number of teachers has been increased from three to eight. At the.beginning or the year; Mr. T. S. Atkinson, lorinerly principal of the secondary department of the Hastings Distriet liigu School, joined the sta:l. Mr. Atkinson came to Banks's College with a high reputation as a successful and careful teaclier, and has more than sustained liis reputation. Mr. J. tV. Miss Dixon's School for small boys Mas merged in Banks's Cbllegd at the end of last year, and Miss Dixon has been ii. charge during the present year of a clas; ot' boys whose ages range from five to eight years. In the third term a visit was paid to the school by the chief inspector, who expressed approval of each of the teachers and the work that wiis bsing done by them. - "The work of the junior departments has been that of training the i>upils for tho seconuary department. In this boys have beeo prepared for Entrance Publio Service, Matriculation, and Solicitors' General Knowledge, Medical Preliminary, and Entrance University Scholarship Examinations. A good number of passes in each of these examinations is anticipated, and it is hoped that the dux boy of the school will win a University Scholarship—tho blue ribbon of secondary education. At the beginning of next year the staff will be still further increased by the addition of Mr. W. T. Foster, M.A. (N.Z), B.Litt. (Oxon.). As Mr. Foster is a distinguished graduate both of New Zealanc. and of Oxford, and has had much experience of secondary education in New Zealand, it is obvious that his joining tho sti.ff will mean a very considerable access of strength to it. Physical drill and gsines have formed a regular part of tho school curriculum.' In the former daily instruction has. been given by Mr. Duffy, who has also instructed the' boys in swimming, methods.of life-saving, etc. The tone of the school has been excellent, aid is a result of the sympathetic and ccrdial understanding between the pupils and masters. The latter have' loyally co-operated in the outdoor life ofthe scl.ool, and have taken part in tho several excursions and picnics, the- object of which hag been to get more intimate knowledge of the boys. The result of the school's work las (been entirely satisfactory. Good work has been done in all departmentsfor all sides of the boys' matures complete .provision has been made.
