6 COUNCIL MEETING. A meeting of the Hutt County Council was held oil Tuesday. The county engineer (Mr. •LamgMeason) reported that the new Wainui-o-Ma-ta Bridge was nearing completion, and would in all probability be ready'for traffic about the middle of February. It was decided to remove the gates off the Oronga-oronga. Road. . The council agreed to the request from the Lands and Survey Department to remove obstacles from the Waiwetu Stream. : The Railway Department wrote complaining that spoil was rolling down on to the railway line from the repair works on the Paekak'ariki Road. The engineer reported that all precautions we're being tg-ken..;..; With respect to the suggestion from the Mount Herbert Council that local bodies should levy rates for patriotic funds,, the council decided not to. make any move in the matter.. The Pet-one Borough Council wrote drawing • attention to their resolution that full pensions be paid to all wounded soldiers and dependents of those'killed. The council, after some discussion, fully agreed with ilie resolution. Councillor Wakoliam was apointed to the vacancy on the Petono Technical School Board occasioned by there now being increased representation. ' ft was decided not to comply with the Raglan County Council's request to dispense with the_ servijes of any men eligible-to serve in the trenches. S.P.C.-A. V 9 FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Mr. J. Meadowcroft presided over the usual fortnightly meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Donations were received from the following:—Mr. James Hamilton, £1; Mrs. Joseph Joseph and United Insurance Company, Ltd., each 10s. 6d.; Mrs. S. Downes, Miss Molineaux, and Llewellyn Smith, 10s. each; "Protector,"L. V. Ludwig, O. Nash, Miss M'Lean, ss. each; Mestqn Bros., Mrs. Baillie, Miss R. Martin, Messrs. J. G. Harkness, and "W. Cook, 2s. 6d. each: Miss Ranwcll, Is. 6d.: total, £5 os. The Inspector, Captain J. Heiiry, reported that several cases had come under his notice, and had been satisfactorily dealt with. One conviction had taken place. Tho City Council wrote, stating that the society's request for tho erection of a horse-trough on the new road leading from tho city to Brooklyn had boen granted.' , __ It was decided that the next meeting be held a month hence.
