THE MEN SUPPLIED
SOUTH ISLAND A DRAFT BEHIND NORTH FILLS THE GAPS While the district system of supplying men for the Expeditionary Force remains in use, one of the most interesting things always will be to know how many men each district has contributed.' Tho Defence Minister has stated the percentages, but) actual numbers are of even greater interest. Tho military prepared a return some time ago to show tho numbers of men supplied by each military district, but did not make. it' public because of a certain discrepancy. Tlie Minister's percentages, published on Tuesday, were apparently based on a force of something over 35,000 men, whereas it has been officially announced tbat up to October 31 (the dale the Minister mentions) New Zealand had -raised 38,000 men. Theße I facts probably reveal tho discrepancy j aliuded to. I Tho numbers of men tho districts have supplied for tho Main Body and Reinforcements up_ lo October 31 are (The Dominion understands) as follows:— Wellington Military District ... 12,31? Auckland Military District 9(724 Canterbury Military District .... 7,430 Gtago Military District 5,866 Dominion total 35,337 The men each district should have supplied (out of 35,337), 'according to Ehe population percentages now used By the military in allotifng their quotas are:— ' Wellington Military Dfstrict .... 11,449 Auckland Military District 8,835 Canterbury Military District .... 8,763 Otago Military District 6,290 Dominion total 35.337 011 tlioso figures the districts have done more "or less'than their population share, according to the following table: ' . More. Less. Wellington Military 'District 868 — Auokland Military District 889 — Canterbury Military District — 1333 Otago Military District — 424 On the same setß of figures the positions of the two Islands stand thus :— Share. Supplied. More. Less. N.I. ... 20,284 22,041 1757 — S.I. ... 15,053 13,296 — 1757 The 1757 which the South Island has failed to supply is a number larger than two_ of the Reinforcement drafts, so that if the North Island . had not made good for the South, New Zealand would have been a draft behind in the fulfilment of its obligations.
