HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
At last evening's meeting of the Hutt Borough Council there were present: The Mayor (Mr. IJ. Baldwin), and Councillors Ilodgins, Meldrura, Carver. Brassel, Clendun. lM'Dougall, Ball, and Llobbs.
A resolution from the Petone Council protesting against the provisions ill the War Pensions Act dealing with the property or iucoiue from all sources of applicants for. pensions was received, and it was decided to support tho views hold by the Petone Cuuucil.
The Town Clerk, Petone, in a letter pointed out that under the Shops and • Offices Act it was necessary to appoint a delegate to attend ;i conference to be held next month for the purposo of deciding upon tho statutory half-holiday for tile combined district of Jiutfc ami L'etoue. It was resolved alter mjiiio discussion tu write to the Petone Council in favour of tho Saturday li.iif-uoliday, and Councillor liall was appointed the Hutt delegate. The borough solicitor (Mr. E. I'. Bunny) advised that tho council had power under Section 340 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 100S, 10 make a by-law regulating fares and charges in connection with licensed vehicles plying for hire within the borough, "ho matter was referred to the Motor By-Laws Committee. The Wellington City .Solicitor forwarded consent to proclamation of rc.ad through the Hutt Park for execution by the council. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that upon the road being put in good order to the satisfaction of tho borough engineer the council would be prepared to sign the necessary deeds. Councillor liall dissented, on tho ground that tl.c nad was not 66ft. wide. Lieutenant-Colonel Potter, Camp Commandant, Trentliam, acknowledged the council's olfor of old library bouks, hut regretted that owing to tho possible risk of infection the offec could lot be availed of. The officer in charge of the Discharged Soldiers' Branch, in reply to inquiries made by the Town Clerk, &tatoi that at present there wero no suitable men registered; requiring clerical employment. The Health Inspector reported two cases of scarlet fever.. > Authority was given the Town Clerk to charge 10 per vent, addition.'.l on overdue rates. The dog tax was fixsd at i's. fid. for working dogs, and ss. for all others. The Works Committee recommended 'that Mr. A. Mills he appended w the following positions: —Borough Hanger, Inspector of Nuisances, Dog Registrar, and Dog Tax Collector, and nn inspector under the following borough hf-laws. — Carriers, carriage, miscellaneous, motor breadth of tyres, exceptional traffic, Hutt bridge traffic. And that he must keep a detailed diary of his daily work for presentation to the council oncc a month. As it was deemed advisable that a new generator be procured for the pumping station with the least possible delay, tho committee authorised the borough engineer to accept the offer cf Messrs. Riley and Co. to supply a Crossloy's suction gas generator plant at a cost of C' 2-13, ui terms of their letter to the engineer of December i, and now ash the council to endorse this action.
