THE ANCONA GRIME
UNITED STATES' NOTE TO AUSTRIA SEVERE CONDEMNATION \ DISAVOWAL AND INDEMNITY EXPECTED By Telegraph—Press Association—OojurrlgM (Rco. December 13, 9 p.m.) Washington, December 12. ' The United States' note to Ausiria denounces the sinking of Mie Anwrna. as an "outrage," and the torpedoing of the vessel bo.fore those on board were üble to leave as "a wanton slaughter of defenceless non-combatants." Tho ' Note emphasises the gravity of the deed, which the world has condemned as "inhuman, barbarous, and abhorrent to all civilised nations." America expects a prompt disavowal, an indemnity, and the punishment of those responsible for the outrage. [The Italian-American liner Ancona, was torpedoed by a German submarine, flying the Austrian flag, under circumstances of a most callous and flagrantly brutal nature. There was a large number of passengers on board—including some Americans—and it is alleged that . tli© submarine not only shelled the liner during the attack, but after sink; ing her shelled the boats.] THREATENED RUPTURE (Rec. TJe/ombcr 14, 1.10 a.m.) London, December 13. / . The "Daily Telegraph's" Washington correspondent states that the feeling iii Government circles is that there is a strong probability of a break with Austria. unless the latter's reply to the United States'' Note is prompt and satisfactory. It ig now admitted that the relations between Austro-Germany and America- are strained, being held together •by the slenderest diplomatic .threads, the severing of which would not 'cause surprise.'
