WAR COUNCIL'S DECISION
GREECE TO- BE HANDED -A FIRM NOTE BALKAN CAMPAIGN TO BE PRESSED UGLY PEACE DEMONSTRATION IN BERLIN ENLISTMENTS IN BRITAIN RECORD RUSH OF RECRUITS TO REGISTER An improved outlook in tie Balkans is opened by the day's news, though the critical features cf the position have by no > means disap- . peared. The Anglo-French Army in Macedonia is falling back upon Salonika, under heavy pressure by I3ie enemy, but General fjarrail reports that the retreat is being methodically continued, without great loss, and thatthe attackers have been heavily punished. "While the Allied Army is obviously still in some danger, the outlook is improved by news that the members of the Entente have reached a definite, agree- ■ ment regarding a plan of operations in the Balkans—a plan in which the retention and defence of Salonika finds a place—that a satisfac-, tory understanding with Greece has been reached, or is in prospect, and . that the Italians are landing troops in Albania. Various references are made to the Dardanelles campaign, but none are very definite ex- • oept a. statement that New Zealanders, repelled a Turkish attack near Kritbia, on the southern front, on Friday last. Further extracts from the election manifesto issued by 31 Venizelos demonstrate that it was a shattering indictment of King Constantino and the policy into which he has led his country. A bombastic statement by the German 'Chancellor on the subject of peace terms figures in the news.
