A private cablegram, received yesterday stYted that Dr. M'Lean, of Wellington, who was wounded in action, has recovered sufficiently to leavo the Endnoigli Palace Hospital. A private letter just to hand from a medical friend of Dr. M'Lean's describes the doctor's wound as being caused by a shrapnel bullet, which lodged in tlio left side, about tbre<! inches from the spine. The jbnllot was located by means of ■X-rays, but on expert advice it was decided not to take surgical measure's to get it out. • M'Lean was also suffering from acute joint rheumatism, but expected to return to the front at an early date.
'All well—getting on all right—too busy to write." Such-was the. wording of a cablegram received yesterday by Mr. Wm. Allan from his.son,,Lahce-Cor-poval ,AV. }{~ J". Allan, a member of No. 1 Hospital, who was on board, the hospital transport Marquette, torpedoed in the, Aegean Sea. The . above cablegram was the first advice Mr. Allen had had of his son since the transport was funk.- , '
Members of the National Reserve paraded at the Town Hall last evening Dut of respect to tho memory of the late Colonel Stewart, of Dunedjii, who died at the front recently. Brigadier-Gen-eral Robin and Colonel Porter addressed a few words befitting the occasion, roferring in terms of eulogy to the man who had, like many, other ■ good Now Zealandors, met his death in the service of his country. At tho conclusion of tho addresses the "Last Post" Was sounded. ' v
Lieutenant Roberts, who was a. member of the Samoan Relief Force,' and who on his return to Wellington was placed in charge of the Discharge partment of the ' Base Records, has taken up .duty at Fort Ballance. Ho steered his department through very strenuous times during the period he was in charge, and his staff, on the evo of. his departure, presented him with a memento of their association' ivith him.
A cablegram. received by Mr. T. E. Corkill_ (Oriental Bay) conveys the information. that his son Eric , Qorkill, formerly of Wellington College and Vic-, toria College, has passed tho final medical examination at Edinburgh: He joined tho R.A.M.O. when, he went to Edinburgh early in 1912, and received a lieutenant's commission. When war broko out he offered for foreign serv vico. : Ho is now awaiting orders as to his destination.,
News has been received in Wellington that. Mr.- Ernest Whiteman, who went to England to offer, his services to the Empire, lias received a commission in the A.S.C., and is'now in France.
Mr. ,D. E. Leslie has. been appointed ; permanent director to the Mastorton Technical School.

Mr. C. Blenkhorn has been installed Mayor of Levin in succession to Mr. B. R. Gardener, who becomes town clerk. Mr. Gardoner has, resigned his seat oh the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. ' - .
Mr. J. H. Carrad,\who has been on the' Magistrate's Court staff at Wellington since 1903, has' received notice of transfer' 1 to- Oamaru, where he will fill the position of Clerk of the Court. Mr. Carrad's position in Wellington will be taken by Mr. W. J. Buckley. .
At a meeting of the Wairarapa Presbytery, held at Carterton on Thursday, the call of the Rev. E. J. Tipler, of Knox College, Dunedin, to the Carterton charge, was unanimously sustained. 'It was decided that the induction ceremony take place at Carterton on December 23.
Miss Annio James has for some years represented St. Andrew's Church, Dunedin, as one of. its foreign missionaries in Canton. About 12 months ago her health broke down, and she had to come back to New Zealand. Feeling quito well again sho . proposes returning to her work.
The death occurred at Napier yesterday of Mr. E. W. DorsetJ for many years secretary of the Wairarapa P. and 'A. Society. Deceased was born in Wellington in 1:1846 and followed sheepfanning in the Wairarapa, being a prominent breeder of Romney Marsh sheep, i Ho leaves a widow and two sons. On account of the indisposition of Captain, W. ;H. Hennah, Inspector of . Government Messengers, who is retiring on superannuation, the complimentary smoke concert which was to bo •tendered to him on December 17 by the Government Messengers' Association, has been postponed until January 5.
