NAPIER "MARDI GRAS"
—— —— 1 The "Mardi Graa" of Napier is the most notable Christmas carnival in tho Dominion. Established in 1913, tho "Mardi Gras" has become recognised as the function which sets tho lead, in carnival matters. It was at Napier that fch t method of electing a Queen by popular vote was first introduced, at tho same time making it a revenue-producing system. The Napier "Mardi Gras" is modelled on the'lines of tho leading Continental and American carnivals. The first item is a great procession on Boxing Day. That event marks the oponing of Napier's annual joyousness. For two days -and two nights tho peoplo. are "kept in- a K'liirl. Attractions follow eaoh other rapidly. Tho levee held by the Queen and the great fancy costume and masquerade, events, together with tho Oriental lintern parade and masquerade ball on M'Lean Park, aro only a few of tho fascinating items which the Napier -people present for the delectatioe of visitors. A pierrot and costume comedy competition is held in one place, while a quick-step contest for brass bands is taking plac9 in another. Highland and other dancing competitions are also included, and altogether the great: Christmas festival of Napier, ia a most attractive function to attend. Tho - "Mardi Gras" has established a wide popularity by reason of its great success in .the past, and commands the respect and attention of all classes. This year further novelties arc introduced, and tho opinion, is generally expressed that the "Mardi Graa" will onbance its reputation as the carnival which seta the pace. . .
