RATES ON A BOATSHED
OLD NAVALsj CANNOT MEET NEW DEMAND. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. J. Alexander and G. A. luebie, representing the Wellington Old Navals' Association, waited on tho finance Committee of the City Council on Tuesday afternoon to air a matter, in connection with the rate demand* made upon the association's boathouse in Jervois Quay. Mr. Alexander said that tho association simply found that it could not pay the rates demanded owing to tho heavy increase in the amount, and tho fact that a large number of their members (35 out of 105) had gone to the front. They could only draw on members from tho Garrison Artillery, and from the Old Wellington Navals, and the annual contribution was only 10s. a year. In 1913 they were only asked to pay £1 6s. 3d. per half-year, but now since the Government men were doing the valuing direct, they were asked to pay £6 7s. per half-year. Their present position was that they • owed about £20, with the 10 per cent, (for being overdue) added. The speaker pointed out that the property, unlike' a business site,- did not earn money. The chairman . (Mr. J. E. Luke) said that, the representations'mifde would be, taken into consideration, and it would bo .borne, in mind .that a number of ■ members, had gone to the front, and the changed conditions generally. At the same time, he pointed out* that they had to recognise the Government valuation made of the club property.
