The "Daily Chronicle says: —"There is a growing feeling amongst politicians that the time-limit of the Earl of Derby's scheme (December 1) ought to bo extended to December 31. There has been a considerable muddle. We do not like to suggest that this is the Machiave 1 lian handiwork of oonscriptionist officials, but unless Lord Derby again brings common sense and business instinct to bear no convinccd conscriptionist is going to regard the proceedings as a fair test of the voluntary system." The Press is-earnestly appealing to young men to come forward and savo Lord Derby's recruiting campaign before it is too late, pointing out- that the whole world is watching the result, and the enemy is giving close and anxious attention to it. Week-end recruiting has increased, but there is an undue proportion of married men. In London the canvaiisers are making ceaseless efforts to sweep' in, those who are making excuses during the remaining -days The "Evening Standard" says that Lord Derby and the Labour loaders in' the country are not satisfied, and points to the magnificent results which have been obtained in tho Dominions—an ob-ject-lesson to the yojing men of Britain. • , .
- The "Daily Mail" says:—"This is 1 the last chance of voluntaryism.' Will 1 the young men of Britain be worthy of 1 the position she holds to-day? They i see reverses at Bagdad and at the l)ar- , danelles due to our insufficient strength. - It rests upon them whether they fight [ as volunteers or conscripts. If they - come forward during the last 120 hours 3 of ''the period fixed they may preserve 1 the principle of voluntaryism."
