A rather unusual prosecution was that •in which the Collector of Customs (Mr. E. R. Brabazon) proceeded against two Chinese residents for breach of the Immigration Restriction Act. The defen- . dants were named as Chan Tee Hop and his wife Van Cliu Ling.. Jfr. P.: S. Iv. Macassey, of the Cro-vn Law Office, represented the Collector of Customs, while Mr. E. G. Jellicoa (instructed by Messrs. O'Regan and Dickson) appeared for the defence, and tendered a plea :of not guilty. \r ■' Mr. Mttcassoy, in outlining the Crown case, stated that lie proposed to prove that /hi •' 1894 'a . Chinaman named Ah Young was naturalised in New Zealand, and that in 1895 Chan Yei Hop paid the poll tax in New Zealand, but did not take out naturalisation papers. Ah Young had since returned to China, leaving his naturalisation papers with a Chinaman in Masterton. These papers (the Crown alleged) had been secured by Chan Yee Hop, who went to Sydney, married Van Cliu Ling, and by making use of _th< naturalisation papers brought his wife into the Dominion without paying .£IOO poll tax. . . , Evidence vras called and the principal witnesses were submitted to lengthy cross-examination by counsel for the defence. Hearing had not concluded yesterday morning, and an adjournment was ordered until Thursday.

The Magistrate regarded M'Donald's latest crime as a particularly mean one—about the worst that had come under his Worship's notice. A sentence of 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour (the maximum penalty) was imposed. VAGRANCY. James Rhodes, an old man, who had been remanded on the previous day on a vagrancy chargo, was committed to the Ohiro Home.
